Drug Uses
Ultram is a pain reliever used for the treatment of pain cause by various medical conditions such as cancer or joint pain or pain cause by surgeries. Ultram reduces the brain’s perception and response to pain. The medicine also decreases the magnitude of the pain signal that the nerve cells pass to each other. Ultram may be prescribed to treat other medical conditions. Contact your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
How Taken
Ultram is in the form of a tablet and is taken orally every 4- hours when needed with or without food. Read the instructions on the packing carefully and contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions. Use the medicine exactly as directed. It may cause dependence. Do not take more pills and do not take it more often or longer that prescribed.
Warnings/Precautions
Inform your doctor before taking Ultram in case you have kidney disease; liver disease; or a history of alcohol or drug dependence. If you suffer from any of these diseases, you may not be able to use Ultram or your dose may have to be adjusted, or you may have to be monitored regularly during the treatment. Do not take Ultram during pregnancy because it is not known if the medicine is harmful to an unborn baby as it falls into the FDA pregnancy category C. Talk to your doctor before using Ultram if you are pregnant. Also, consult your doctor if you are breast-feeding because it is not known if Ultram can pass into breast milk and can affect the baby. Patients older than 75 years are more likely to have side effects. Their maximum daily dosage is 300 mg. Ultram is not approved for usage by children younger than 1 years of age.
Missed Dose
In case you miss a dose, take the drug as soon as you remember. If it is already time for your next dose, skip the missed one and take the scheduled one. Do no take a double dose.
Possible Side Effects
Side effects from Ultram are not common but they may occur. The most common side effects are in the central nervous system (Migraine, Speech disorders) and gastrointestinal system (Gastrointestinal bleeding, Hepatitis, Stomatitis, Liver failure). Consult your doctor if the following side effects continue or worsen: dizziness, headache, drowsiness, blurred vision, upset stomach, vomiting, and diarrhea. If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately: fast heartbeat, redness, swelling, and itching of the face, numbness or tingling of the hands and feet, difficulty breathing, changes in urination, seizures.
Storage
Ultram should be stored in a tightly closed container at a temperature of 25°C (77°F); fluctuations allowed to 15 - 30°C (59 - 86°F).
Overdose
If you suspect an overdose of Ultram, immediately search for medical help. An overdose may be indicated by difficulty breathing; shallow, weak breathing; and seizures.
More Information
Do not consume alcohol during a treatment with Ultram because this combination may cause a dangerous decrease in breathing and/ or liver problems. Be very cautious and alert when driving, operating machines or performing other dangerous activities. Ultram may cause dizziness or drowsiness, and if you experience these effects, avoid performing the above-mentioned activities. Avoid using sleeping pills, tranquilizers, sedatives, and antihistamines because they may enhance the drowsiness caused by Ultram.
