Drug Uses
Triphasil is an oral birth control pill used to prevent from pregnancy and to regulate the menstruation. Some contraceptives are also used to treat acne or as an emergency contraceptive. Consult your doctor if you want to use Triphasil for these purposes. The usage of this medicine does not protect you against sexually transmitted diseases, such as HIV and gonorrhea.
How Taken
Triphasil is taken once a day with food or after a meal to avoid stomach problems. It is a good idea to take the pill at the same time every day because this will not forget to take it. Read the instructions on the packing very carefully and follow the intake schedule strictly. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions. You should use a second contraceptive method during the first week of usage, because the medicine needs time to take effect. In case you want to use Triphasil as an emergency contraceptive, follow the instructions provided by your doctor.
Warning
In case you smoke while you use Triphasil, the risk of heart problems increases. It is recommended that you stop smoking while using the pills. If you smoke more than 15 cigarettes a day and if you more that 35 years old, the risk of heart problems is bigger.
Precautions
Do not take Triphasil if you are pregnant or think you are pregnant. Consult your doctor before taking the medicine if you are breast feeding because it may pass into the milk and may be harmful for the baby. Inform your doctor about your medical history and if you have any of the following diseases: high blood pressure, asthma, stroke, kidney disease, liver heart disease, blood clots, heart attack, history of jaundice (yellowing skin/eyes) or high blood pressure during pregnancy, excessive weight gain or fluid retention during menstrual cycle, seizures, migraine headaches, breast cancer, high blood level of cholesterol or lipids (fats), diabetes, depression. This birth control pill may cause darkening of the skin on the face (melasma) which may be intensified by sunlight. Ask your doctor about usage of sunscreens and protective clothing. It may take a long time to get pregnant after you stop the usage of birth control pills. Consult your doctor about that. Contraceptives increase the risk of strokes, heart attacks, gallbladder disease, blood clots, high blood pressure, vision problems, and liver tumors. The risk of heart problems is increased even more with smoking (more than 15 cigarettes a day) and age (smokers over 35 years old and non-smoker over 40 years old). Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions. Contraceptives may cause vision problems if you are near-sighted or if you use contact lenses. If such a problem occurs, consult your doctor. Inform your doctor or dentist that you use contraceptive if you are about to have medical or dental procedure.
Interactions
Inform your doctor about all other medicine you use. Some medicine may reduce the efficiency of this contraceptive. Among them are: Griseofulvin, many antibiotics (e.g. penicillins, macrolides, tetracyclines, sulfas, cephalosporins), chloramphenicol, many seizure medications (e.g. phenytoin, barbiturates, primidone, carbamazepine), dapsone, rifamycins (e.g. rifampin), modafinil, nevirapine, nelfinavir, ritonavir, St John's wort, troglitazone. You may have to use a second contraceptive method during a treatment with the above-mentioned drugs. Consult your doctor about that. Inform your doctor if you use: thyroid hormone drugs, certain benzodiazepines (e.g. diazepam, chlordiazepoxide), prednisone-like drugs, certain antidepressants (e.g. tricyclics), beta-blockers (e.g., metoprolol), "blood thinners" (anticoagulants such as warfarin), and insulin. This product can affect the results of certain lab tests (e.g. thyroid). Inform all laboratory personnel that you use this drug. Birth control pills may significantly intensify the effects of alcohol. Consult your doctor or pharmacist about this. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Triphasil may affect the results from different laboratory tests (e.g. thyroid) and you should inform the laboratory personnel that you take this contraceptive. The usage of birth control pills may increase the effects of alcohol. Talk to your doctor about this. Do not start or stop taking Triphasil without a consultation with your doctor or pharmacist.
Over Dose
If you suspect an overdose, immediately search for medical help. An overdose may be signaled by nausea and vomiting. Females may experience vaginal bleeding.
Missed Dose
Read the instructions on the packing to find out what to do in case you miss a dose. Your actions depend on the type of medicine you use and on the number of missed doses. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
Possible Side Effects
The usage of Triphasil may cause headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, stomach upset, bloating, or nausea. Consult your doctor if these effects continue or worsen or if you experience the following side effects: groin or calf pain, sudden severe headache, severe depression, chest pain, shortness of breath, lumps in the breast, weakness or tingling in the arms or legs, yellowing of the eyes or skin. Inform your doctor or pharmacist in case you notice any side effects that are not listed in this leaflet.
Storage
Store Triphasil at a room temperature 59 and 86 degrees F (between 15 and 30 degrees C). Keep it away from moisture and sunlight.
Additional Information
Do not miss appointments with your doctor or with the laboratory. You should undergo a full medical examination at least once a year (blood pressure, breast and pelvic examinations, PAP test for vaginal cancer). Never give your birth control medicine to someone else. Exam your breast yourself and contact a doctor if you find any lumps. Read the information on the packing very carefully.
