Drug Uses
Tetracycline is an antibiotic used for treatment of or prevention from infections caused by susceptible bacteria.
How Taken
The common dose is 1 to 2 grams a day. If the treated infections are severe, your doctor may increase the dosage of the medication. The intake should continue for at least 24 to 48 hours after the symptoms have been reduced.
Warnings/Precautions
Consult your doctor before using the medication in case you are hypersensitive to tetracyclines. The usage of Tetracycline without a proven bacterial infection or a prophylactic indication will not be beneficial and enhances the risk of drug-resistant bacteria development.
Missed Dose
Missed doses and incomplete treatment will decrease the effectiveness of the treatment. There is also a risk the bacteria to develop drug-resistance and in this case you cannot be treated with Tetracycline or similar drugs in the future.
Possible Side Effects
Among the side effects caused by Tetracycline are: anorexia, epigastric distress, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bulky loose stools, stomatitis, sore throat, glossitis, black hairy tongue, dysphagia, hoarseness, enterocolitis, and inflammatory lesions (with candidal overgrowth) in the anogenital region.
Storage
Tetracycline should be stored at a room temperature, away from heat, in tightly-closed, light-resistant containers. Keep away from children.
Overdose
If you take an overdose of the medication, search for medical help immediately.
More Information
If the treatment with Tetracycline is long-lasting, you should undergo regular evaluation of the renal, hepatic and hematopoietic systems.
