Drug Uses

Skelaxin is a muscle relaxant that is used for the treatment of pain and stiffness of muscle injuries such as strains, sprains and muscle spasm.

How Taken

Skelaxin is in the form of a tablet and is taken orally. The usual dosage is two pills (800 mg) three to four times a day, taken with food or after a meal. The medicine is recommended for adults and children aged over 12 years. Use Skelaxin exactly as directed; do not take less or more pills and do not take it more frequently or longer that prescribed.

Warnings/Precautions

You should not take Skelaxin in case you have acute intermittent porphyria. Consult your doctor before taking Skelaxin if you have liver disease. Your dose may have to be decreased, or you may have to be monitored regularly during the treatment. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant. It is not clear if Skelaxin affects a fetus. Also, do not use the medicine if you are breast feeding because it is not known if the drug passes into breast milk. Skelaxin should not be used by children younger than 12 years of age.

Missed Dose

In case you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, but only if this is within one hour. Otherwise, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose.

Possible Side Effects

The most common side effects caused by Skelaxin are nausea, vomiting, gastrointestinal upset, drowsiness, dizziness, headache, and nervousness or "irritability." Other side effects include: hypersensitivity reactions, characterized by a light rash with or without pruritus; leukopenia; hemolytic anemia; jaundice.

Storage

Skelaxin should be kept at a room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (between 15 and 30 degrees C), away from sunlight and moisture.

Overdose

If you suspect an overdose, immediately search for medical help. An overdose of Skelaxin may be signaled by severe drowsiness or unconsciousness.

More Information

Be very cautious and alert when driving, operating machines or performing other dangerous activities. Skelaxin may cause dizziness or drowsiness, and if you experience these effects, avoid performing the above-mentioned activities. Be cautious when using alcohol because it may enhance the drowsiness and dizziness caused by Skelaxin.
