Remeron Tablets - Treatment of Major Depressive Disorder
Mirtazapine (trade name Remeron) is an antidepressant used for the treatment of moderate to severe depression. It has a tetracyclic chemical structure and is classified as a Noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressant (NaSSA). Mirtazapine have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat depression.

Drug Uses

Remeron is a medication used in cases of major depressive disorder. The drug treats symptoms of depression, for example feelings of sadness, worthlessness, guilt; loss of interest in regular daily activities; changes in appetite; tiredness; oversleeping; insomnia; suicidal thoughts.

How Taken

Remeron comes as tablets and is taken with water. In the beginning of the treatment the patients are recommended to take 15 mg tablets once a day before bed time.

Warnings/Precautions

Do not use Remeron if you are currently taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor or if you have taken such within the last 14 days. Consult your doctor before using Remeron if you have some of the following conditions: liver disease; kidney disease; a manic-depressive disorder; blood problems; high or low blood pressure or heart disease; have had a heart attack in the last 6 weeks; or have epilepsy or seizures. If you suffer from any of these diseases, you may not be able to use Remeron or your dose may have to be adjusted, or you may have to be monitored regularly during the treatment. Do not take Remeron during pregnancy because it is harmful to an unborn baby as it falls into the FDA pregnancy category C. Talk to your doctor before using Remeron if you are pregnant. Also, consult your doctor if you are breast-feeding because Remeron can pass into breast milk and can affect the baby. Patients aged over 60 years may experience side effects including drowsiness, dizziness, low blood pressure, unsteadiness or may feel uncoordinated. In such cases, your doctor may prescribe lower dose of the product.

Missed Dose

In case you miss a dose, take the drug as soon as you remember. If it is already time for your next dose, skip the missed one and take the scheduled one. Do no take a double dose of Remeron unless it is prescribed by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

Contact your doctor immediately and stop taking Remeron if you develop any of these side effects: an allergic reaction (swelling of the lips, face, or tongue; difficulty breathing); seizures; a fast or irregular heartbeat; or fever, chills, a sore throat, flu-like symptoms, or sores in your mouth or nose. If you have any of the following less serious side effects, continue using Remeron but inform your doctor: drowsiness; nausea; increase in weight or appetite; dizziness; dry mouth; constipation; or mild tremor. Other different side effects that are not listed here may also occur. If you notice some unusual effects or conditions, inform your doctor about them.

Storage

Keep Remeron at a room temperature between 20°- 25° C(68°- 77° F), in a tightly closed, light resistant container.

Overdose

The following overdose symptoms have been reported: disorientation, drowsiness, impaired memory and tachycardia. Conditions like ECG abnormalities, coma or convulsions have not been reported to follow an overdose with Remeron. If any of these effects occur, immediately search for medical care.

More Information

Be very cautious and alert when driving, operating machines or performing other dangerous activities. Remeron may cause dizziness or drowsiness, and if you experience these effects, avoid performing the above-mentioned activities. Dizziness may also occur when you change your position from sitting or lying into rising. You can prevent the dizziness if you rise slowly. Be cautious when using alcohol because it may enhance the drowsiness and dizziness caused by Remeron.
