Drug Uses
Nexium is a medicine used for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a condition in which backward flow of acid from the stomach causes heartburn and injury of the esophagus (food pipe between the mouth and stomach). Nexium treats the symptoms of GERD, allows the esophagus to heal, and prevents from further damages of the esophagus. It is also used in combination with other drugs to prevent stomach ulcers. Nexium falls into the class of medications known as proton pump inhibitors and it reduces the amount of acid produced in the stomach.
How Taken
Nexium is in the form of long-acting capsules and is taken orally. The common dosage is one pill a day that should be taken at least an hour before eating. Do not chew, split or crush the capsules, swallow them whole. If you cannot swallow the capsules, open them and mix the pellets with some apple-sauce.
Warnings/Precautions
Inform your doctor if you have any liver disease. You may not be able to use Remeron or your dose may have to be adjusted, or you may have to be monitored regularly during the treatment. Consult your doctor before taking Prevacid in case you are pregnant. The medicine falls into the FDA pregnancy category B and it is not expected to harm a fetus. It is not known in the drug passes into breast milk. It is recommended that you talk to your doctor before using Prevacid if you are breast feeding a baby. There are reports of fatal hypersensitivity (anaphylactic) reactions in patients treated with penicillin. The risk of such reactions is higher if you have a history of penicillin hypersensitivity and/or a history of sensitivity to multiple allergens. Pseudo membranous colitis has occurred with almost all antibacterial agents, including clarithromycin and amoxicillin. The symptoms may be mild but they may also be life threatening. Doctors should take this diagnosis into consideration in patients who have diarrhea and use any antibacterial agents.
Missed Dose
In case you miss a dose, take the drug as soon as you remember. If it is already time for your next dose, skip the missed one and take the scheduled one. Do no take a double dose.
Possible Side Effects
Nexium may cause side effects like headache, constipation, cough, or diarrhea. If they worsen, continue or are bother you, call your doctor. Consult your doctor immediately if you have throat pain, chest pain, severe stomach pain, or coffee-ground vomit. If you experience an allergic reaction, contact your doctor immediately. an allergic reaction may be signaled by rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. Other different side effects that are not listed here may also occur. If you notice some unusual effects or conditions, inform your doctor about them.
Storage
Nexium should be stored at a temperature of 25°C (77°F); fluctuations are allowed up to 15 - 30°C (59 - 86°F). Keep Nexium in a tightly closed container.
Overdose
If you suspect an overdose of Nexium, immediately search for medical help. The symptoms caused by an overdose are drowsiness, shortness of breath, tremor, loss of coordination, and seizures.
