Drug Uses
Fioricet is a barbiturate sedative that contains a combination of non-aspirin medicine (acetaminophen) and caffeine. It is a non-narcotic drug used to treat tension headaches caused by medical conditions of the muscles and neck and shoulders, and migraine.
How Taken
Fioricet is in the form of a capsule and a tablet that should be taken orally. The common dosage is one or two tablets every 4-6 hours. Take the medicine directly as directed. Do not take more than 6 tablets a day. Do not use Fioricet for a long period of time because this may lead to a physical dependence.
Warnings/Precautions
Fioricet may cause drowsiness. You should not drive, operate machinery and perform any dangerous activities until you find out the way your body responds to the medicine. Inform your doctor if you have had history of severe depression and drug abuse. Be cautious when using the medicine if you are older or if you have liver, kidney or abdominal trouble. Consult your doctor before taking Fioricet if you are pregnant because the drug may harm a developing fetus. The medicine also passes into breast milk and it is recommended to stop breast feeding during the treatment with Fioricet.
Missed Dose
In case you miss a dose, take the drug as soon as you remember. If it is already time for your next dose, skip the missed one and take the scheduled one. Do no take a double dose.
Possible Side Effects
The most common side effects are: abdominal pain, dizziness, drowsiness, intoxicated feeling, light-headedness, nausea, sedation, shortness of breath, vomiting. Other side effects may be the following: agitation, allergic reactions, constipation, depression, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, earache, exaggerated feeling of well-being, excessive sweating, excessive urination, excitement, fainting, fatigue, fever, flatulence, headache, heartburn, heavy eyelids, high energy, hot spells, itching, leg pain, mental confusion, muscle fatigue, numbness, rapid heartbeat, ringing in the ears, seizure, shaky feeling, skin redness and/or peeling, sluggishness, stuffy nose, tingling.
Storage
Fioricet should be stored below 86° F (30° C) in a tightly closed container. Keep away from children.
Overdose
An overdose of Fioricet may cause unconsciousness and even death. An overdose may be signaled by severe drowsiness, confusion, extreme weakness, hallucination, shortness of breath, too slow or troubled breathing, slurred speech, lack of coordination, vomiting with blood, unusually slow heartbeat.
More Information
You should not take Fioricet if you have used MAOI in the last 14 days. The medicine may cause serious side effects. It may enhance the effects of other medicines which cause drowsiness. Inform your doctors about all medicines you are taking.
