Drug Uses
Elidel is a medicine used to treat atopic dermatitis (eczema). It is for external use only. Elidel may be used by adults and children over 2 years of age. The usage of Elidel may be for short periods or for intermittent long periods. The medicine may be used on all skin areas, including the face and the neck.
How Taken
A thin layer of Elidel is applied on the affected skin areas twice a day. You should rub the cream until it is absorbed by the skin. Elidel may be used on all skin areas, including the face, the head, and the neck. If the symptoms do not disappear after 6 week, you should consult your doctor. Avoid using occlusive clothes.
Warnings/Precautions
Consult your doctor before taking Elidel if you have the congenital skin disorder Netherton's syndrome. Inform your doctor in case you: have a skin infection; have a disease of the immune system; or are using any other type of skin product (e.g., cream, ointment, lotion, etc.). If you suffer from any of these diseases, you may not be able to use Elidel or your dose may have to be adjusted, or you may have to be monitored regularly during the treatment. Elidel falls into the FDA pregnancy category C and it is not known if the medicine is harmful for a fetus. Consult your doctor before you use it if you are pregnant or if you plan to get pregnant during the treatment. Also, consult your doctor if you are breast feeding because it is not clear if Elidel passes into breast milk. Elidel should not be used by children younger than 2 years of age.
Missed Dose
In case you miss a dose, take the drug as soon as you remember. If it is already time for your next dose, skip the missed one and take the scheduled one.
Possible Side Effects
The most common side effect you may experience is burning or feeling of warmth on the area of application. These side effects usually occur in the first five days of usage and disappear after a few days. Consult your doctor if the side effects continue more than a week. Other side effect you may experience include headache, and with long-term intermittent use, common cold/stuffy nose, influenza, sore throat, fever, viral infection, and cough. Some patients may have herpes skin infections (like cold sores, chicken pox, or shingles), warts, or swollen lymph nodes (glands).
Storage
Elidel should be stored at a temperature of 25°C (77°F); fluctuations are allowed to 15°C-30°C (59°F-86°F). Do not let a freezing.
Overdose
An overdose of Elidel is not expected and its symptoms are not known. If you take the cream orally by mistake, contact your doctor for an advice.
More Information
You should avoid sunlight and sun laps as well as tanning beds and treatment with UVA or UVB light. Use protection on the treated areas when you go outside. Do not use other skin products on the areas treated with Elidel.
