Drug Uses

Detrol LA is in the form of capsules with extended release and is used to treat overactive bladder with symptoms of urge urinary incontinence, urgency, and frequency.

How Taken

Detrol LA may be in the form of tablets and long-acting capsules that should be taken orally. The usual dosage is two pills a day, taken with liquid. Read the instructions carefully and follow them strictly. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any question. Take the drug exactly as your doctor told you; do not take less or more pills, or for a longer period of time. Do not chew, crush or split the capsules, swallow them whole with liquid.

Warnings/Precautions

Do not take Detrol LA in case you have a blockage of the urinary tract (difficulty urinating); or a blockage in the intestines. Before taking Detrol LA, tell your doctor if you have liver disease; kidney disease; or glaucoma. If you suffer from any of these diseases, you may not be able to use Detrol LA or your dose may have to be adjusted, or you may have to be monitored regularly during the treatment. Do not take Detrol LA during pregnancy because it is harmful to an unborn baby as it falls into the FDA pregnancy category C. Talk to your doctor before using Detrol LA if you are pregnant. Also, consult your doctor if you are breast-feeding because Detrol LA can pass into breast milk and can affect the baby.

Missed Dose

In case you miss a dose, take the drug as soon as you remember. If it is already time for your next dose, skip the missed one and take the scheduled one. Do no take a double dose of the medicine.

Possible Side Effects

Contact your doctor immediately and stop taking Detrol LA if you develop an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives). If you have any of the following less serious side effects, continue using Detrol LA but inform your doctor: dry mouth, dryness of the eyes, blurred vision or large pupils, upset stomach, headache, constipation, difficulty urinating, drowsiness, or dizziness. Other different side effects that are not listed here may also occur. If you notice some unusual effects or conditions, inform your doctor about them.

Storage

Keep Detrol LA at a controlled temperature of 20° to 25° C (68° to 77° F).

Overdose

If you suspect an overdose of Detrol LA, immediately search for medical help. The overdose may be signaled by: restlessness, tremor, irritability, seizures, delirium, hallucinations, flushing, fever, nausea, vomiting, a fast heartbeat and possibly coma.

More Information

Be very cautious and alert when driving, operating machines or performing other dangerous activities. Detrol LA may cause dizziness or drowsiness, and if you experience these effects, avoid performing the above-mentioned activities. Be very careful when using alcohol because it may increase the drowsiness and dizziness cause by Detrol LA. Avoid overheating of the body because it will decrease sweating and this increases the risk of heat stroke. It is recommended that you drink a lot of liquids to maintain hydration of the body.
