Drug Uses

Amoxil is an antibiotic from the group of medicines called penicillin. Amoxil is used for the treatment of various infections caused by bacteria, for example: tonsillitis, pneumonia, ear infections, bronchitis, urinary tract infections, gonorrhea, and infections of the skin. The drug can be used for different purposes, too.

How Taken

Amoxil is in the form of a capsule, a chewable tablet, liquid and pediatric drop, and it is taken orally. The common dosage is three times a day, as each dose is taken 8 hours after the previous. Follow the instructions on the packing and if you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist. Take the medicine exactly as prescribed; do not use more or less of it. The liquid and the pediatric drops should be shaken before usage. The dose of the pediatric drops should be carefully measured with the bottle dropper. The liquid or the drops may be mixed with milk, juice, water, or other cold liquid and taken immediately. The tablets should not be swallowed before they are chewed. The capsules should be taken with a glass of water and should be swallowed without chewing. The intake should continue even if you feel well. Consult your doctor before you stop taking Amoxil.

Warnings/Precautions

Consult your doctor before taking Amoxil if you have ever had an allergic reaction to some other drug from the penicillin group or to a cephalosporin. Inform your doctor in case you have kidney disease, stomach disease or intestinal disease. Amoxil is not expected to affect and harm a fetus, and it falls into the FDA pregnancy category B. This medicine is treated as safe for usage during pregnancy but do consult your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to get pregnant during the treatment. Amoxil passes into breast milk but there are no reports of serious problems. In some cases, but very rarely, Amoxil may cause a yeast infection, diarrhea, or an allergic reaction in a nursing infant without serous harm. If you are breast feeding, consult your doctor before using Amoxil.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, and continue taking the doses for the day at even intervals of time. If it is time for your next regular dose, skip the missed one and continue taking the rest of the doses as instructed. Never take a double dose of Amoxil if you are not directed to do so by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

Consult your doctor immediately if you have severe or bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps. Contact your doctor immediately and stop taking Amoxil if you develop any of these side effects: an allergic reaction (shortness of breath; closing of the throat; hives; swelling of the lips, face, or tongue; rash; or fainting); seizures; or unusual bleeding or bruising. If you have any of the following less serious side effects, continue using Amoxil but inform your doctor: mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain, white patches on the tongue (thrush/ yeast infection); itching or discharge of the vagina (vaginal yeast infection); black, "hairy" tongue or sore mouth or tongue. Other different side effects that are not listed here may also occur. If you notice some unusual effects or conditions, inform your doctor about them.

Storage

Keep away from children. Amoxil should be kept away from heat, direct light and moisture because they make the drug break down. The liquid form of Amoxil should be kept in the refrigerator but not at freezing temperatures. Read the instructions carefully and follow them strictly. Do not use the medicine if it is outdated.

Overdose

If you take or suspect an overdose of Amoxil, immediately search for medical help. An overdose may be signaled by the following symptoms: muscle spasms or weakness, pain or twitching, pain in the fingers or toes, loss of feeling in the fingers or toes, seizures, confusion, coma, or agitation.

More Information

Inform your doctor immediately in case you have severe or bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps during the treatment. You should take the whole prescribed dose of Amoxil even if you start feeling better before the treatment is over. Amoxil may reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills, and it is recommended that you use a second method of birth control while taking Amoxil.
