Drug Uses
Aldara Cream is used for the treatment of external genital and perianal warts. The cream stimulates the body to fight against the virus. The medicine may be used to treat some other medical conditions.
How Taken
Aldara Cream is applied on the warts before bed time and is left to work while the patients sleep. It should be washed with water in the morning. Use the medicine exactly as directed. Do not use it for a longer period of time because it may cause skin reaction. Aldara Cream is used only on the skin; do not take it orally. Keep the cream away from the eyes and the nose. Apply Aldara Cream only on the areas that should be treated. Consult your doctor if you have any questions about the usage of the cream. Aldara Cream is used once a day for 3 day a week to treat external genital and perianala warts. The cream should be left on the skin for a period of 6-10 hours. The medicine is used once a day for 2 days a week to treat actinic keratosis. The cream should be left on the skin for a period of 8 hours.
Warnings/Precautions
Consult your doctor if you experience severe skin irritation or flu-like symptoms (diarrhea, fatigue, fever, headache, or muscle pain). You may have to reduce the usage of Aldara Cream until the flu-like symptoms disappear. Avoid having genital, oral, or anal sex while the cream is applied on your skin. The medicine contains certain oils which may weaken rubber condoms, diaphragms and cervical caps and may reduce their effectiveness. Do not use other medicines on the same areas of the skin where you apply Aldara Cream. Do not give the medicine to other people. Consult your doctor before using the medicine in case you are pregnant.
Missed Dose
In case you miss a dose, apply the cream as soon as you remember and continue using it following your schedule.
Possible Side Effects
Among the most common and frequent side effects cause by Aldara Cream are:
- redness,
- swelling,
- a sore, blister, or ulcer,
- skin that becomes hard or thickened,
- skin peeling,
- scabbing and crusting,
- itching,
- burning,
- changes in skin color that do not always go away.
Storage
Aldara Cream should be stored below 25oC (77oF). Avoid the freezing of the medicine. Throw the medicine away it is outdated or if you no longer need it. Keep Aldara Cream in its original container, away from children.
Overdose
Continuous usage of Aldara Cream may lead to sever local skin reactions and may increase the risk for systemic reactions.
