Drug Uses
Aldactone falls in a group of drugs named potassium-sparing diuretics and it reduces the amount of fluid in the body without loss of potassium. Aldactone is used in the treatment of edema (swelling) and hypertension (high blood pressure), potassium deficiency and hyperaldosteronism (a hormonal disorder).
How Taken
Aldactone is a tablet that should be taken orally. It is commonly taken once a day (with breakfast in the morning) or twice a day (with breakfast and lunch). You have to read the instructions very carefully and to follow them strictly. Talk to your doctor of pharmacist if you have any questions. Do not take less or more of the medicine. Aldactone is used to control high blood pressure, not to cure it. Its usage should continue even if you feel well. Consult your doctor before you stop taking it.
Warnings/Precautions
Consult your doctor before using Aldactone in case you have kidney disease; have liver disease; have diabetes mellitus; have high levels of potassium in your blood; or are taking a potassium supplement or an angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitor (ACE inhibitor). If you suffer from any of these diseases, you may not be able to use Aldactone or your dose may have to be adjusted, or you may have to be monitored regularly during the treatment. Do not use Aldactone during pregnancy because it falls into the FDA pregnancy category D and it is known to be harmful for a fetus. Also, consult your doctor if you are breast-feeding because Aldactone may be able pass into breast milk and to affect the baby.
Missed Dose
In case you miss a dose, take the drug as soon as you remember. If it is already time for your next dose, skip the missed one and take the scheduled one. Do no take a double dose of Aldactone.
Possible Side Effects
Contact your doctor immediately and stop taking Aldactone in you develop any of these side effects: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives); an irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, fatigue, confusion, weakness, numbness, or tingling (caused by high levels of potassium in your blood); or decreased urination. If you have any of the following less serious side effects, continue using Aldactone but inform your doctor: unusual headache or dizziness; nausea, diarrhea, or a decrease in appetite; dry mouth; bloating; muscle cramps; or lowering of the voice, excessive hair growth, or enlarged breasts. Other different side effects that are not listed here may also occur. If you notice some unusual effects or conditions, inform your doctor about them.
Storage
Aldactone should be kept in its original container, tightly closed, at a room temperature, away from heat and moisture. Keep the drug away from children. Do not use it if it is outdated. Your doctor or pharmacist should inform you about the proper way of disposal of Aldactone.
Overdose
Symptoms of an overdose may be drowsiness, mental confusion, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, or diarrhea. If you take an overdose of Aldactone or if you suspect an overdose, immediately search for medical help.
More Information
Aldactone is also used with other drugs for the treatment of precocious puberty or myasthenia gravis, female patients with abnormal facial hair. Consult your doctor about all possible risks from taking the medicine in your condition.
